We hope you enjoy our photographic tour of the Hutchinson Center's Southeast Lake Union Research Campus through the lens of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca, the architectural firm who designed this award winning world-class research center.

Architect: Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership, Seattle

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is the most complete lab project I've ever seen. It integrates a very complex building type completely with a very tight site -- the courtyards, the entries, the views -- everything seems to fit. It also has a definite humanistic touch. The other important aspect is the mechanical systems: the interstitial application and the creative use of interstitial spaces for interaction areas added a layer to the project that made it head and shoulders above the other projects we saw." (1994 Laboratory of the Year Jury)

The Center consists of three, two-story lab buildings, of which two are joined by a common atrium and the third by a mid-level sky bridge and a courtyard at ground level. All buildings, as well as the courtyard, are situated over three below grade levels of parking and support facilities.

An atrium connects the three laboratory levels with conference/common spaces and vertical circulation at the center of Lab Building I and II. Around the perimeter of the atrium, the interstitial space is utilized for additional conference, lounge and office space, which also enhances interaction.
