Montana is home to a successful K-12 educational system and an impressive higher educational system.
The success of Montana’s K-12 system is evident in state results. In 2001, Montana had a 78.5% high school graduation rate, ranked 8th in the U.S. and 17% higher than the national average of 67.2%. In the past decade, Montana has ranked in the highest-performing states in 14 indicators, including the state’s international standing in 8th grade science. Nationally, Montana is ranked 7th in both Education Output, an average of 4th grade reading and math scores and the state’s mean ACT score, and Education Efficiency, an average of the cost per student for Education Output values.
The Montana University System contains five state universities, an equal number of colleges of technology, three community colleges and seven unique tribal colleges. The state universities include Montana State University-Bozeman and the University of Montana, Missoula, and offer numerous undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programs. Montana’s colleges of technology, such as Great Falls College of Technology, offer associate programs, in addition to seminars and professional workshops. Local community colleges, such as Flathead Valley Community College, offer GED, certificate, associate and continuing education programs. Tribal colleges, such as Little Big Horn College, are unique in their essay to provide higher education specifically tailored to tribe members.
There are four private colleges and universities in Montana: Carroll College, Rocky Mountain College, the University of Great Falls and Yellowstone Baptist College.
